Sorrento is a city to visit in its whole,
from Piazza Tasso (Tasso Square) where there is the monument of
Torquato Tasso, born in Sorrento on 11th March, 1544 from Bernardo,
a courtier and literary man and a noble woman.
Not far, there is the Saint Antonino Basilica in baroque style,
founded probably in the XI century upon the sepulchre of the
saint who is buried in the crypt. The Cathedral also,
located in Corso Italia, founded in 1000 and then
reconstructed in 1400 in renaissance forms, is of particular interest.
In the inner part of the church, at the end of the centre nave,
there is a marble pulpit and the Episcopal chair, both of the 1500,
and it is also important to note the rich "coir";
with intarsia done by the Sorrento school.
Don’t miss the Correale Museum of Terranova, a 600’s villa
with a beautiful garden, where classical and medieval works,
paintings of the Naples school and minor art
collections are shown.
The cult and art of the Nativity
Scene flourished in Naples in the first decades of the
‘500, similarly to what three centuries before had been
done in Greggio by the poor man of Assisi. The merit of
initiating the taste for the fine 700’s nativity scene must
be given to Carlo III the Bourbon, who enjoyed building
them with his own hands, with the help of his wife Amalia
who had the task of dressing the many figures which
populated the Nativity Scene with inimitable elegance.
The long experience
matured throughout four generations gave origin,
in 1978, to the Sorrento Intarsio S.n.c. of SCALA
